The practice of branding one’s cattle is thought to date back to the ancient Egyptians who began branding their livestock 2,700 BCE.

The word “brand “  is believed to stem from the ancient Germanic language,  Old Norse, which today is the modern language of Scandinavia.

Same as in the past, brands were used to identify one’s property, and the practice is widely used today.
